Recently, I read a fascinating article about a US-based ‘start up’ that has developed technology that is able to scan your handwriting and reproduce it to create robot-written greetings and thank you notes. Isn’t it telling that even in our time-poor society, the hand-written note is still social currency and worth paying several hundred dollars to fake?
Many of us remember participating in a post-Christmas thank-you-letter-writing marathon (and on receiving our pressies having to list what was from whom). I know it was a feature of my Christmas school holidays, and am sure many of you can relate. Endlessly diverse and appealing, bookplates (also called ex libris bookplates, Latin for “from the books of”) are decorative labels to be stuck inside a book’s cover to display the book’s ownership. At its most basic, the ex libris bookplate is a small step up from scribbling your name on the inside cover, but at its most elaborate they are works of art in miniature. Is there anything more bookishly charming than a beautiful bookplate?
December is that wonderful time of year where friends and relatives who may not keep regular correspondence reach out with carefully considered and thoughtful messages, cards and notelets are sent by the dozen and thank you cards are then written following visits and the exchange of gifts.
