Having an Order of Service Booklet for a christening or baby naming ceremony provides both a lasting momento of the day and gives useful information to guests. Through the ages, people have held ceremonies of celebration, christening and initiation for the gift of a child. This is a time to gather, to be glad and to pledge to bring your child up in the ways you value and want honoured
Similar to an Order of Service for a wedding, it will list the details of the event including the child’s name, date, time and location and we recommend that this information is sited on the front cover.
Inside you should list the order of the service and give details of any readings, poems, prayers, hymns or anthems. To help your guests, you can include the words of any hymns, songs, words or prayers in which you would like them to take part as a collective. If you are holding your ceremony in a church, you can use the church’s hymn books and just show the hymn numbers for reference; this can save time and space in the Order of Service. Details of the reception afterwards can also be included to aid guests.
We think it’s essential to speak with the person ‘officiating’ – whether a priest, vicar, registrar, celebrant or family member or friend – to seek their input and advice in creating your Order of Service.
Whatever the case, an Order of Service is a bespoke item and should be tailored to your ceremony and include the things which are important to you. There is no right or wrong way to do it!
