The Savvy House Movers guide to moving house
Donate your unwanted items
With every move there is usually a cathartic clearing of clutter (normally spurred on by the fact that you can’t bear the thought of packing it and then unpacking it at the new house). So what do you do with these now unwanted items? There is a big trend on giving, many of us are donating our ‘moving clutter’ to Charities such as Free Cycle will also collect your items for a small fee. We often see celebrities in the news donating their unwanted designer clothes and accessories to a charity shop to help raise money for a particular cause so why don’t you! Pick a charity that means something to you, then donate your ‘moving clutter’ you could even send your friends and family an beautiful HoneyTree card to announce your items are at your chosen charity and encourage them to visit.
Pamper your pooch
None of us want to put our beloved pets through the stress of your home being packed up, doors and gates being left open and even the horrible possibility of them being packed themselves amidst the chaos. Yes you could of course place them in the kennels but our research tells us that the savvy house movers head for the luxury pet spa, yes they want to pamper their pets. One owner told us “Last time I moved I noticed how stressful it was for my dog, the change of environment and also the stress of being in a kennel. This time I decided to do something different and give my pooch a pamper. I have to say that this was completely the best decision as she arrived at my new home, relaxed and more inquisitive rather than confused. I’ve told all my friends to do the same.”
Hire the professionals
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there were people that could pack your possessions with care and organisational efficiency? That your old and new houses were cleaned top to bottom before you even left or got there. Where your items were unpacked in your new house, placed in the right room, put away and all the cardboard removed? That your utilities and electronics were set up and ready to go on the day you arrived? That the fridge was fully stocked and that there was someone on hand, to take you through the finer details of your new home (how on earth does the new boiler work?). Well, this is no longer a dream.
Moving companies have changed and now they are offering amazing personalised services to make your home move the most luxurious experience ever. Oh and don’t think this is just for the rich and famous, apparently according to the moving companies we spoke to, the personalised offerings are one of the fastest growing areas of their business. So it seems even you want a luxury experience.
The relaxed DIY move
Sometimes our budget determines that we have to move in a more DIY way, but don’t think that you have to miss out on some luxuries. The key is to be organised. Pack each room at a time and clearly label your boxes with the room and whether it is urgent. For more personalised boxes how about using some of our fun “This belongs to” labels, we know children particularly love using these. Pack yourself a ‘sanctuary,’ box containing a few of the ‘close at hand,’ essentials such as phone charger, emergency chocolate ration, screw driver, scissors, toilet Loo roll, hand soap, kettle, tea bags, milk, mugs and a cork screw! One serial DIY mover told us “We prefer to do the move ourselves, we have more control should things get delayed and flexibility to the speed and time of the move. It is hard work, but when you have finished unpacking the last box there is a great satisfaction and what’s more the money we save we can spend on some gorgeous luxury pieces for our new home.”
The perfect end
Let’s be honest no one wants to cook on their first night in their new home so make sure you have researched your new local restaurant takeaways before you move. Grab a few menus and place in your sanctuary box. We are not talking a normal takeaway but a look for highly regarded restaurants who would be willing to do a take away for you. Your first night should be filled with candles, your favourite glass of bubbly and a delicious meal from a fantastic restaurant, your own kind of luxury.
